What happens if you stop plaquenil

Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Also I noticed that the Plaquenil I think was making me feel different but not in a good way.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine takes a long time to get out of the system - up to 18 months. Be certain you and your physician agree you should discontinue it. HealthTap does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. For these services, please use HealthTap Prime or Concierge. See Additional Information. You can also monitor yourself between visits with a special grid called an Amsler grid, which can be obtained through your ophthalmologist. If your ophthalmologist does find some Plaquenil deposits, s/he will simply request that you stop taking the medication, and you may follow up with your rheumatologist about another advised method of treatment.

Did you take yourself off Plaquenil, or did your doctor tell you to go off it? Plus I will be honest the whole eye site thing even though rare has always freaked me out. I went off of it to see if I can manage not being on it as my lupus isnt as severe as other cases but already I am feeling very fatigued and my legs feel heavy if that makes sense. I can discuss alternatives with my DR at my next appt but my DR feels as though the plaq is the best bet for my level of illness. If so are you just dealing with Lupus symptoms or did you take another med? I'm on Plaquenil, and after the first week's GI upset, I have had no problems with it.

Plaquenil is one of those meds you can just stop. My rheumy told me to take a months rest from it once. I asked him about 'tapering' and he said "No - just stop it - and resume after a month." Since a number of medical conditions can be worsened with the use of Plaquenil, warnings and precautions for the medication should be discussed with your healthcare provider before treatment begins. Let your healthcare provider know if you have psoriasis, liver disease, alcoholism, or a G-6-PD deficiency before using Plaquenil.
