But Chloroquine has significantly higher rate of retinal toxicity, so it isn't used much anymore. Also, Plaquenil appears to effectively reduce flares in patients with lupus not necessarily by suppressing immunity. May 20, 2008 Because the action of Plaq isn't really understood in SjS, and it's a unique classification of drug in treating AIs, there really isn't a substitute for it, but there are other classes of drugs, also called DMARDS disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs that are also used. Substitutes and alternatives to Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine for uses like Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus and Malaria I'm still searching for that magic "all natural" replacement since I cannot tolerate plaquenil. The stomach, liver & eye complications are too great to bear. and that's at the lowest, lowest dose. Anyway, guess I need to get into some deeper research about exactly what this drug does, and see if there's an herb out there that may help.

Chloroquine can be substituted for Plaquenil but only in limited circumstances. Please provide more detailed information if you want a more specific answer. Apart from some stomach quiziies, I have never stopped this drug, as long as it demonstrated it is working. Other than that we see a few people who have increased skin pigmentation called "plaquenil ochronosis". The dirrence with Remicade (infliximab) is that it blocks the tnf-a receptor, rather than binding tnf-a itself, but it accomplishes the same thing.

  6. The alternative to Plaquenil is a slightly different anti malarial called Quinacrine. Plaquenil replaced Quinacrine formerly called Atabrine for anti malarial prophylaxis so now the Quinacrine has to be made up into pills or gel capsules by a compounding pharmacy. If you google you will find details of compounding pharmacies.

Dec 29, 2004 "Natural" alternative to Plaquenil. I "know" I need some meds, but cannot tolerate Plaquenil. Wondering if anyone has come across something "natural" that mimics it. While I have had to add other immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory drugs to the mix Imuran and Celebrex, the Plaquenil is the star. I have to get my eyes checked every six months via a field of vision test and overall exam to make sure I don't have a loss of vision due to it, but so far, so good. Apr 02, 2010 there are several drugs now that you can take instead of the plaquenil. these type of drugs they have now work in a different way then the methotrexate and plaquenil. most of these drugs you will still take the methotrexate.
